Tooth-Colored Fillings in Troy, NY

Why Would I Need A Filling?

Any tooth with a cavity will require a filling. We will remove the decayed area of your tooth and fill it with a tooth-colored composite material to prevent bacteria in the cavity from continuing to do damage to the tooth. The sooner the cavity is filled, the better because they never go away on their own. Left untreated, decay will spread, compromise more of the tooth, and eventually reach the root, which could require a root canal.

With tooth-colored fillings, our patients can keep their dentistry natural-looking as well as durable.

What Causes Cavities?

young boy smiling in dental chairIn short, bacteria and acid cause cavities. Many people want to blame sugar, but that's not exactly the case. While sugar is an excellent food source for bacteria and plays a significant role in cavity formation, it does not cause cavities directly. However, bacteria feed on sugar and produce enamel-corroding acids as a byproduct.

Acidic foods also compromise tooth enamel by softening it. Over time, this leads to a cavity, and the deeper it goes into your tooth, the harder it becomes to clean. Because cavities grow in size and cause significant problems, we recommend scheduling a preventative checkup with Dr. Hogeun Chi.

Lowering Your Risk of Cavities

The foundation for a cavity-free smile is excellent dental care. If you're not sure that you're brushing and flossing correctly, ask your hygienist for tips. There are also several other steps you can take to minimize your risk of cavities:

  • Reduce both your intake of sugary foods and overly acidic foods to help keep the enamel on your teeth safe and strong.
  • Brush your teeth shortly after consuming sugary or acidic food or drink to reduce the risk of cavities.
  • Develop a treatment plan with your dentist to correct existing issues with your oral health that will positively impact the rest of your mouth's health.

I Have a Cavity, What Now?

We recommend that you get your cavity treated and filled as soon as possible. There is no way to undo the damage to the tooth once the cavity has formed, and to prevent it from doing more damage to the tooth, you should schedule an appointment to get it filled.

Composite Tooth Fillingsillustration of composite dental filling

The practice of dentistry is advancing at a rapid pace. Evergreen Dental Care places a lot of value on providing patients with a comfortable and leading-edge dental experience, providing the best patient outcome. We are proud to offer composite fillings that come with numerous advantages over traditional metal-colored amalgam fillings:

  • Tooth-colored fillings are virtually invisible once they are set, creating the appearance of natural teeth. The composite can even be used to hide dental imperfections with cosmetic bonding.
  • The composite material binds teeth better, meaning that the amount of tooth material removed for the filling is smaller, and the filling is much less likely to come loose.
  • The composite material does not expand or contract because of temperature fluctuation like metal fillings.

  • Worn or damaged enamel doesn't protect the tooth's inner layers, allowing hot and cold sensations to penetrate the tooth.
  • Dental conditions like gum disease and exposed roots cause pain and sensitivity on and around the tooth.
  • A deep cavity irritates the tooth and eventually damages the nerve.
  • A worn-out filling fails to protect the nerve from cold and hot.
  • A crack or chip in the tooth puts the tooth's root in contact with the open air and food, causing significant pain and sensitivity.
  • Root infections that are hypersensitive to heat.
  • Tooth grinding and clenching can make teeth feel more sensitive, especially upon waking.

If the sensitivity has just started, it might indicate recent damage to the tooth or surrounding area, and a dentist should see it as soon as possible. To properly diagnose the cause of the sensitivity, Dr. Hogeun Chi will perform a comprehensive oral exam, during which he and the patient can work together to create a treatment plan.

Dental Crowns vs. Fillings after Root Canals

For teeth with minimal chewing demand, like certain front teeth, a filling might be suitable after a root canal. However, for teeth that endure greater force, such as molars and premolars, a crown is generally advisable. The crown acts as a protective cover, fortifying the tooth and preventing potential breaks.

The decision between opting for a filling or a crown after a root canal often depends on the tooth's position, function, and structural strength.

Tooth-Colored Fillings Technology

Electric Handpieces at troy dental office

Electric Handpieces

Electric handpieces directly replace older, air-driven handpieces that have been around for decades and come with a number of major advantages:

  • Significantly quieter than air-driven technology, helping decrease anxiety
  • Provides better control to the dentist, resulting in better patient care outcomes
  • Maintains constant torque, unlike air-driven handpieces, which makes them better at working through dense materials. Because of this, dentists no longer have to compensate for fluctuating RPMs and produce better results.
