Early gingivitis symptoms may be subtle and easy to dismiss, which is why six-month checkups are so important. If you do notice symptoms, they may include some or all of the following:

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing and flossing
  • Red or inflamed gums with mild to moderate recession
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, even with oral care

Remember, the first signs of gingivitis may not be noticeable, so never skip checkups and teeth cleanings with your Troy dentist.

Gingivitis and Gum Disease Explained

Gingivitis is an early gum disease (periodontal disease) or a precursor to gum disease. In this stage, your dentist can reverse the condition through diligent care. However, it is no longer curable when gum disease progresses to periodontitis.

Despite periodontitis being incurable, it’s crucial to seek treatment. Without intervention from your dentist, you risk tooth loss and systemic health complications. For example, studies now link untreated gum disease to specific types of dementia, heart health complications, respiratory issues, low birth weight, and so much more.

Gum Disease Diagnosis and Treatment

Gum disease symptoms are similar to those of gingivitis. However, they may be more significant or pronounced as the disease progresses.

  • Bleeding gums
  • Loose, mobile teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Gum irritation
  • Gum recession

Your dentist checks your periodontal health at every visit and monitors changes since your last checkup, so you should never skip these appointments.

If you’re diagnosed with gum disease, we provide prompt treatment to mitigate the associated risks.

Treatments can include topical antibiotics, a prescribed oral care routine at home, deep teeth cleanings with the dentist, and scaling/root planing.
