Possible Side Effects of Partial Dentals: What You Need to Know

Dentures restore form, function, and aesthetics to the mouth of a person who’s suffered from tooth loss. While the term “dentures” may immediately conjure an image of someone who’s lost all of their teeth, partial dentures (or “partial dental” or “partials”) are more common than full dentures.

Though partials have gained in popularity in recent years, they do bring with them potential side effects.

What Are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are removable, prosthetic dental devices designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. Partials are increasingly popular among patients who, through decay, accident, disease, or age, have suffered from tooth loss, as recent technological advances have made them more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before.

Partial dentures, which are custom-made from natural-looking porcelain acrylic resin, are attached to remaining natural teeth on either side of space vacated by tooth loss via clasps or other attachments and restore mouth function and smile.

Possible Side Effects of Partial Dentals

  • Soreness – Early on, some patients experience soreness or discomfort in their gums. This is normal and tends to subside as the gums adjust to the dentures.
  • Difficulty speaking – A person may initially have difficulty speaking with partial dentures. This will decrease with time and comfort.
  • Changes in taste – In cases in which partials cover the roof of the mouth, a temporary impact on the wearer’s sense of taste has been observed.
  • Pressure sores – If partials are not fitted properly, they can cause pressure sores on the gums.
  • Bad breath – Bad breath can result if food particles get trapped between partials and the gums. This can be prevented through regular cleaning of the dentures and good oral hygiene.

It’s important to note that these side effects are generally both temporary and improve with time. However, in the event of persistent or severe discomfort, it’s important to speak to a dentist as soon as possible.
